Airbags for cyclists, the UCI is serious about increasing safety on the road

In a statement released Friday, the International Cycling Union (UCI) announced that it had decided at a meeting in January to launch a call for ideas dedicated to the development of airbags for riders and new technical garments, with the aim of increasing safety in cycling.
With regard to airbags, the intent is to define a clear framework and appropriate standards that allow for the design and integration of these devices in both racing and training. The goal is to create precise rules that encourage effective and regulated development of the technology.
In parallel, the UCI wants to take a closer look at technical apparel: this involves evaluating the integration of airbag solutions directly into garments and identifying tools to strengthen the protection offered by fabrics, which are becoming lighter and thinner due to the evolution of materials.
Interested manufacturers have until mid-March to express their interest. Then, during 2026, meetings with dedicated working groups are scheduled to define a detailed regulatory framework and verify the concrete effectiveness of the submitted projects.
