Basketball, Maurizio Gherardini sends a clear message to all clubs

On the occasion of the Frecciarossa Final Eight of the Italian Cup, Maurizio Gherardini addressed several issues. After rattling off several data, all positive, about the Piedmontese kermesse, the number 1 of Italian basketball sent a strong message to all clubs. The goal is to grow the entire Italian basketball movement and get it back to the top of European basketball, with the help of all the components of the movement itself.
“Basketball health status of our basketball? When I took the helm in October, I always used the word sustainability a lot. We have to be sustainable if we want to grow. We have to change the culture of our clubs. We cannot spend all the money on the roster. We also need to invest in other things, not just rosters. What has happened to us? So many factors, maybe we did not realize that it was changing the way of doing business in basketball,” the words of the president of the Basketball League Serie A.
“We are studying the other leagues, the ones that are doing well in Europe. If we look at Germany, we see that they have grown so much. They have a very strong national team that is winning a lot, players who are in the NBA, but above all they have healthy clubs that know how to manage themselves financially. The quality of any league starts from a different management of clubs,” Maurizio Gherardini continued.
Then, loud and clear, the message to all Italian clubs, at any level: “We have to change our culture and look at the big picture. At the moment we are the sixth league in Europe but, in my opinion, we have the potential to do much better.”
A quip also about the NBA Europe project: “It is going ahead and it is a very important project. The fact that they have taken into consideration Italian realities is remarkable. We will have to see how it will develop but it is indisputable that it is a very important project.”
