It began on Monday, with the rally scheduled in Livorno, the path of the Italbasket in view of the two 2027 World Cup qualifying games against Great Britain, scheduled on Friday, March 27, in Newcastle and Monday, March 2, right in Livorno. Compared to the first convocations, head coach Luca Banchi will not be able to count on Sasha Grant: the 24-year-old Vanoli Cremona player has in fact been cleared to leave the gathering, due to a muscle soreness.

On the contrary, the three players of Olimpia Milano, Diego Flaccadori, Nico Mannion and Stefano Tonut, returning from the victorious Final Eight played in Turin last week and ended with the victory of the Red Shoes in the final over Tortona, are already available. So there are thirteen, plus four reserves who will remain until Tuesday, the Azzurri at Banchi’s disposal to prepare for the two challenges to the British, which are crucial to continue hoping for qualification to the next World Cup.

These are all the players available: Giordano Bortolani, Davide Casarin, Andrea Calzavara, Amedeo Della Valle, Diego Flaccadori, Nico Mannion, John Petrucelli, Marco Spissu, Luigi Suigo, Amedeo Tessitori, Stefano Tonut, Giovanni Veronesi and Luca Vincini. The four reserves, who will train together with the other Azzurri basketball players but will not leave for Great Britain, are instead Charles Atamah, Leonardo Marangon, Cheickh Niang and Luca Possamai.

Two of the six scheduled days have been played so far, as far as Group D of the European World Cup qualifying zone is concerned: all four components of the group, namely Great Britain, Lithuania, Iceland and Italy have won one game and lost the other, which is also why the en plein against the British will prove crucial for the continuation of the qualification.

The top three will advance to the round and go into a six-team group with the best three from Group C (which includes Turkey, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Switzerland), taking with them the results of the first phase and facing only the teams from Group C. The best three placed in the maxi group will then go to Qatar for the 2027 World Cup.
