After winning the gold medal at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, the U.S. women’s national ice hockey team decided not to travel to the White House for official celebrations. An absence that sounds like a rejection of Donald Trump, who would have wanted them in Washington at the traditional State of the Union Address, one of the most solemn political appointments in the United States, during which the president addresses the House and Senate to take stock of the national and international situation.

There’s an official reason behind this refusal: “We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold-medal winning women’s national ice hockey team and deeply appreciate the recognition for this extraordinary achievement – a USA Hockey spokesperson told NBC News. Due to timelines and academic and professional commitments already scheduled after the Games, the athletes will not be able to participate”.

Behind the non-participation there could also be something else, given what happened immediately after the men’s national team won gold (triumphant in the final against Canada). Trump had phoned the locker room, as the players were celebrating, to officially invite them to the White House. During the call, however, amid general laughter he had added: “I have to get the girls to come too, otherwise I would probably be impeached if I did not invite them” too.

Lindsey Vonn meanwhile is back home: the U.S. skier, fresh from her dramatic accident in the downhill at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, has in fact been discharged from the hospital, as she confirmed in a post on Instagram in which she revealed new details of her injury: “When you suffer such a severe trauma in one area of the body the blood accumulates and gets blocked, basically crushing everything”.

Vonn explained that she almost lost her leg, which was saved by Dr. Tom Hackett, an orthopedic surgeon who works for Team USA: “He opened her up and let her breathe and saved me. If I hadn”t competed, he wouldn”t have been there and wouldn”t have been able to save my leg. As if the injuries on the left limb were not enough, it has only now been discovered that during the fall he also broke his right ankle.
