It could be Manuel Neuer’s last months between the goal posts of Bayern Munich. The legendary goalkeeper is nearing the end of his contract with the German champions, where he has played since 2011. In exactly one month the former German national team member will turn 40, and these days he is recovering from a muscle injury with the goal of returning to the field for Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund.

But the rumors do not stop, and according to Kicker Neuer would already have a decision on his future soon. The goalkeeper would have no intention of moving to North America, as Thomas Müller, who currently plays in MLS with the Vancouver Whitecaps, has done. For Neuer, there are only two options: either continue his career for another year at Bayern Munich, or retire for good.

The goalkeeper, who will make his final decision in the spring, has therefore already made one thing clear: He wants to finish his career with Bayern Munich. The decision on renewal will be based only on his physical condition, and whether he assesses that he will also be performing in the coming season.

If Neuer signs a contract until 2027, he would in any case be willing to cede the starting role for more games to reserve Jonas Urbig, who needs to grow and gain experience to succeed him as first goalkeeper. In case of retirement, on the other hand, Bayern Munich could go back on the market in search of a backup goalkeeper, unless they try to rely on one of those still on loan, Daniel Peretz and Alexander Nübel.

All Neuer’s concentration is now on the big match against BVB scheduled for the weekend. The goalkeeper has already returned to training and the coach and technical staff will make a final decision shortly. Kompany may decide to leave him on the bench as a precaution, and still rely on Urbig.
