Clamorous what happened at the Chinese GP, the second round of the Formula 1 World Championship. At the start of the GP, as many as four single-seaters did not show up on the grid. Specifically, the two McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, Gabriel Bortoleto’s Audi, and Alexander Albon&#8217s Williams raised the white flag.

Nearly four drivers forced to miss the GP due to problems with their respective single-seaters. Particularly notable is McLaren’s double grid absence. The reigning World Champion stable had to deal with two heavy forfeits. Lando Norris had ECU problems. For the Australian, other issues but so significant that they prevented him from being able to run on the track. It should be remembered that the McLaren mounts Mercedes engine.

For Oscar Piastri this is the second retirement before the start. Even at his debut, at the Australian GP, the Australian had not even started the GP. In that case for a mistake he made on the formation lap. For McLaren, the start of the new season could not have been more negative. A double retirement is certainly not the best way to react to the dominance of Mercedes and Ferrari.

The four retirements before the start at the Chinese GP confirm how, at the moment, the new power units are still not fully understood by the various racing teams.
