Jannik Sinner explains the key to victory with Tiafoe

Jannik Sinner continues to fly on American cement. After capturing the title in the Indian Wells Masters 1000, the world number two reached the semifinals of the ‘Miami Open,’ overwhelming Frances Tiafoe (6-2 6-2) in the quarterfinals. “I think that starting the match well is very important,” said the Light Blue in the heat. “When you start off by going one break ahead right away, you already gain good confidence. At the same time, opponents can be very aggressive, so I try to stay as solid as possible in my shots.”
“Mentally, too, there can be ups and downs on both sides, so I try to stay very calm and take advantage of the opportunities that come my way. I think this was the key today,” added the South Tyrolean champion, who was the protagonist of a perfect day on serve (14 ace against only one double fault) and zero break points conceded to the American.
“Being hungry for success, in my opinion, is something natural,” explained the world number two who, thanks to the victory with Tiafoe, rose to ten consecutive wins. Mentally you have to stay calm and be relaxed even off the court, because in the last three or four weeks I’ve been playing a lot, between matches and training.”
“I’m trying to continue on this path. I know that this is my last tournament on concrete before moving to clay, so I’m very happy to have reached the semifinals again,” concluded Sinner, who is back among the top four players in the U.S. Masters 1000, the fourth time in five appearances.
In Miami, Jannik Sinner goes after the Sunshine Double, the name by which the Indian Wells and Miami Masters 1000s are known, because they are organized in sunny California and Florida. The last person to succeed in winning both in the same season was none other than Roger Federer in 2017.
