The soccer world is apprehensive for Mircea Lucescu, who was hospitalized due to an illness he suffered on Sunday morning while coaching Romania’s selection.

The 80-year-old head coach, reached by Golazo, recounted what happened: “I got too angry after watching the highlights of the game against Turkey and I lost consciousness, I couldn’t breathe. I’m fine now.”

Romania was eliminated in the semifinal playoff against Turkey, and had to give up the dream of World Cup qualification. Lucescu, who just days ago became the longest-serving technical commissioner in soccer history, can’t rest. “We made unbelievable mistakes that cost us qualification.”

His condition is now good, and Lucescu, who was hospitalized twice more between December and January, may soon leave the hospital. Romania will play a friendly on Tuesday against Slovakia, defeated at home by Kosovo 3-4 and also excluded from the 2026 World Cup.

Lucescu, however, will not be there: doctors will still keep him under observation in the coming days. The former Inter coach is battling an illness that he would not reveal, however.

“When the doctors told me I could continue coaching, I focused on what I had to do for Romania. I talked to the federation and they told me they couldn’t find a solution. I am not in my best shape, so I would have stepped aside if there was another option. But I insist: I cannot leave as a coward,” he said in a recent press conference.
