Mourning in soccer, farewell to Gianluca Cherubini: he was only 52 years old

The soccer world mourns the death of Gianluca Cherubini. After a long battle with a serious illness, the former Roma defender, among others, has passed away. He was only 52 years old. Breaking the news of his passing was former Chieti captain Alessandro Battisti via social: “There are no words. A life at 220 km per hour, always hovering and on the edge of the cliff. I will miss you.”
A precocious talent, he distinguished himself with the Under 21 jersey with which he also won the European Championship in 1994 (five total appearances with the Azzurrini). He made his debut in professional soccer with the jersey of Reggiana, going on to tread the fields of Serie A with the Roma jersey. This was followed by several experiences in other clubs such as Vicenza, Chieti, Torres and Giulianova.
In 2006 he was the protagonist, despite himself, of a dramatic episode. During the Novara-Giulianova match, he was struck by a brain aneurysm, remaining in a coma for a good 12 days and even risking losing his life. After that episode he returned to play but without being the same.
During his career he played with great champions, including a very young Francesco Totti at the time when he played for Roma, then coached by Carletto Mazzone. After his farewell to soccer, his life was by no means easy. The memory remains of a true talent, the kind that could have done great things.
