Matteo Berrettini bitterly commented on his elimination in Monte Carlo at the hands of Joao Fonseca: “The serve is a very important weapon and today I was not able to make it work as usual, partly due to the opponent’s merit and partly due to my own demerits. Then, when I lose the rhythm with the serve, the ground game also suffers because I can’t serve with serenity.”

The Azure extolled the talented Brazilian, whom he considers a potential rival to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz: “At his age I was only playing Future tournaments, while he at 19 has already made quarters in a Slam, quarters in a ‘1000’ and won a ‘500’ tournament; so if I think about how much I improved after the age of 19, we can imagine all the potential that Fonseca still has at his disposal.”

“Usually, one is in a big hurry to designate a third baseman between Sinner and Alcaraz; of course, he will come, and he has the qualities to become one,” Berrettini confirmed. “Obviously, I don’t know how much he can win in the future, but basically he is a player with no gaps: he hits the ball very well, moves well, serves well, and always fights.”

Berrettini is looking forward to his home tournament: “Playing in Rome is a great gift I give to myself. For all the path I’ve taken from the time I was a child going to watch the players to the time I was able to play there myself. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to enjoy it as much as I’d like, and I’d be happy to experience it without too much regret. That’s the drive that keeps me going on the field every week.”
