Jose José Mourinho’s future on the Benfica bench remains uncertain. Despite a contract valid until 2027, the Special One has begun to send out ambiguous signals: on the one hand he reiterates his desire to stay, on the other he hints that he would like an extension, deferring any decision to the club. President Rui Costa, on the other hand, merely reminds us of the validity of the agreements already signed, without venturing further.

On the eve of the big match against Sporting, Mourinho fueled doubts: “Obviously I cannot guarantee that I will stay at Benfica.” Then, in a quip directed at a journalist, he added, “Can you guarantee that you will stay in your TV?”, snatching a laugh in the press room.

According to A Bola, behind this game of statements there would be a very specific strategy, shared with attorney Jorge Mendes: Mourinho is not satisfied with the current deadline and is aiming for a renewal with revised economic and time conditions. The club, however, considers the existing arrangement already satisfactory, while the coach continues to push for a new agreement that would strengthen his role in the project, going so far as to provoke with the idea of signing “even for ten years.”

Although Rui Costa speaks of “full agreement,” Mourinho maintains the conditional, a sign of a latent tension that could turn into a rupture if results do not improve. Indeed, the disappointing draw against Casa Pia has pushed away the top spot, occupied by Francesco Farioli’s FC Porto, and also put at risk qualification for the next Champions League (with second place only worth the playoffs).
