Under the Foro Italico sun, on a day with an almost summer-like climate, came a bitter setback for Italian tennis at the Internazionali d’Italia. Jasmine Paolini, the defending champion, said goodbye to the tournament at the end of a complicated challenge against Elise Mertens, who won in a comeback with a score of 6-4, 6-7, 3-6.

The Azzurra had started the match in the best way showing good intensity and winning the first set. In the second partial, however, she failed to take advantage of three match points that could have closed the match. From that moment the match totally changed direction in favor of her Belgian opponent.

Mertens also did not offer a flawless performance, but in the decisive moments she proved to be more concrete, especially on serve. Also crucial was the Belgian’s long backhand, a shot that several times put Jasmine Paolini in trouble.
