The rematch of the round of 16 of the Madrid Masters 1000 between Flavio Cobolli and Daniil Medvedev will not take place: the Roman tennis player, in fact, was defeated in the third round of the Internazionali d’Italia by Argentine Thiago Agustin Tirante, number 69 in the ATP rankings and executioner, in the previous rounds, of another Italian, Gianluca Cadenasso, and of British Cameron Norrie.

Monday night’s match ended 6-3, 6-4 in Tirante’s favor, with Cobolli never leading in the first set and unable to create the right opportunity in the second fraction to put the match back on more favorable tracks. Therefore, Cobolli’s adventure, who had instead defeated Frenchman Terence Atmane in his debut, is interrupted at the second hurdle.

There are therefore four Italian bishops remaining, as far as the round of 16 is concerned: Lorenzo Musetti will take on Casper Ruud on Tuesday morning, while in the afternoon Luciano Darderi will face Alexander Zverev and the other two Italians, Jannik Sinner and Andrea Pellegrino, will play a highly anticipated tricolor derby on the Central.

Despite today’s defeat, Flavio Cobolli achieved his best result in Rome this year, reaching the third round. However, regret remains for slipping earlier than the home fans expected, especially in light of the brilliant performance that had taken him all the way to the quarterfinals in Madrid.
