Bortolani, there's not just Varese to feel out the ground

Giordano Bortolani had chosen Cantù last summer with the aim of carving out more space for himself after a parenthesis with little minutes at Ettore Messina’s Olimpia Milano. The Sicilian outfielder’s season ended with an average of 12.8 points in 24.3 minutes, accompanied by 36.8 percent in three-point shooting, making an important contribution to the Brianzoli’s difficult salvation run.

The player is still bound to Cantù for another season, although the usual exit clauses are present in the contract. In the biancoblù household, everything remains in flux: in fact, the arrival of new sports director Simone Giofrè and the coach who will take over Walter De Raffaele’s legacy are awaited before defining the future of the roster.

In the meantime, however, several clubs are already starting to move around Bortolani. Pallacanestro Varese is closely following the guard’s situation, while Bertram Derthona is also reportedly considering his profile to fill the possible departure of Tommaso Baldasso, destined for Virtus Bologna.

Bortolani himself, asked about the subject during the season, had preferred to postpone any evaluation until the end of the year: “I feel I have made the right choice, especially because I am in an important square and I have found continuity on the court – he had told ‘Tuttosport’ -. For the rest, in the coming weeks I will define my future: at the end of the season I will meet the club to talk about the next year.” Words that confirm how the player wants to calmly evaluate the options on the table, without burning time.

The picture around Cantù is destined to clarify in the coming weeks, with the definition of the technical leadership representing the top priority of the Brianza management. Among the names circulating for the bench are Frank Vitucci, Max Menetti and Alessandro Magro, with the former considered the most natural profile because of his affinity with newly appointed sporting director Giofrè. Only after solving the coaching rebus will the club be able to sit down at the table with Bortolani and decide whether to bet on him again or leave him free to find a new arrangement.
