Italy’s repechage to World Cup, amid controversy a fearsome rival throws in the towel

India was defeated 2-0 by Jamaica in the Unity Cup 2026 semifinal played at The Valley in London. The match was decided by Courtney Clarke’s opening goal in the 8th minute and Kaheim Dixon’s double in the 78th minute, a result that gave the Jamaicans, 71st in the FIFA rankings, access to the final. There is controversy, however, because the Caribbeans showed up without a number of quality players: the federation evidently threw in the towel after having cradled the dream of repechage ahead of the World Cup to be played in Canada, Mexico and the United States. After all, the Jamaicans were left out by a whisker, having lost the play-off to the Republic
For the Indian national team, currently 136th in the world, it was the first match played in the United Kingdom in 24 years: the last time was again against Jamaica, in 2002. Now India will face Zimbabwe in the final for third place in the tournament, scheduled for May 30, while Bob Marley’s grandchildren will take on Nigeria.
Jamaica started very aggressively finding the lead right away after a Gurpreet Singh Sandhu clearance exploited by Clarke. The Caribbeans continued to create chances, coming close to doubling as early as the 17th minute with Dixon, who was stopped, however, by the Indian goalkeeper.
In the first half India struggled to make themselves dangerous, but in the second half they grew significantly. In the 53rd minute, the Blue Tigers also found the way to the goal with Chhangte, but everything was nullified due to offside by Rahim Ali in the previous action.
The Khalid Jamil-coached team tried to raise the tempo and put pressure on the opponent’s defense, but in the Indians’ best moment came Dixon’s decisive play. The Charlton Athletic outfielder skipped past several defenders before beating Sandhu with a precise low shot for the final 2-0.
In the final, Jamaica controlled the match without any problems, thus winning qualification to the Unity Cup final.
