Failure to qualify for the next Champions League, after a first half of the season that had fueled very different expectations, continues to weigh on the Milan environment. According to Sportmediaset, Rossoneri fans, who have long been critical of the ownership and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, are struggling to see signs of a turnaround, and not even the sweeping overhaul of the management has managed to erase the disappointment over the fifth-place finish in the last league season.

After weeks of deliberation, Gerry Cardinale decided to hand the reins to Ruben Amorim, a choice that, however, does not seem to have sparked much enthusiasm among Milan fans. The doubts surrounding the Portuguese coach stem both from the delicate situation the club is currently facing and the fact that his name was not initially at the top of the list of candidates. Before settling on Amorim, in fact, Milan had considered several other candidates, from Andoni Iraola to Matthias Jaissle, including Oliver Glasner.

What raises concerns above all is the situation the coach will find at Milanello, which in some ways resembles the one he faced during his time at Manchester United. In that instance as well, Amorim found himself at the helm of a historic club grappling with difficult years. Despite reaching the Europa League final—which they ultimately lost to Tottenham—his tenure in the Premier League was marked by results that fell short of expectations, despite a major transfer campaign that brought in players of the caliber of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo.

The hope among the Rossoneri faithful is that Amorim will be able to replicate the style of play and results that made him a key figure at Sporting Lisbon. To do so, however, he will have to navigate a complex situation, in which several questions remain regarding the club’s future and corporate structure.
