Cristiano Ronaldo steals the show again at the 2026 World Cup. After facing criticism following his first match against Congo, CR7 more than made up for it, scoring a brace and becoming the first player in soccer history to score in six different World Cup tournaments. “They say I’m old, but I’m still here. It’s been a tough week full of criticism, but we responded on the field,” the five-time Ballon d’Or winner said in the mixed zone.

“I’ve been doing this for 23 years and responding to criticism. The important thing was to work for the team and have confidence,” said Ronaldo. “We’re working well and we’re improving. Speaking of myself, those are prestigious goals to achieve, but I prefer the team’s goals. We’ve had a difficult week, but we’re teammates who work well together.”

Ronaldo’s good mood was partly dampened by a question about his rival Lionel Messi, who has scored five times so far in this World Cup: As soon as CR7 heard the Argentine’s name, he turned away, brushing off the question. “Next question. I’ll answer you, but it depends on what you ask me. Otherwise, I won’t speak,” Ronaldo concluded succinctly.

Portugal’s head coach Martinez had this to say after the victory: “We’ve delivered an important response; we’re here to improve as the tournament progresses. The stars have come alive; I’m very happy with the result. Cristiano’s movements are the absolute best inside the box—it was only a matter of time.”
