Wimbledon Draw: A Tough First Round for Jannik Sinner; Jasmine Paolini Faces One of the Summer’s Surprises

The draw for the main draws of the Wimbledon tournament took place late Friday morning: World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will face a strong opponent in Miomir Kecmanovic, having won all four of their previous matches against the Serbian. The top-ranked Italian woman, Jasmine Paolini, will face Robin Montgomery, who advanced through qualifying but made a name for herself just a few days earlier with a surprise victory at the ‘s-Hertogenbosch tournament.
Returning to the men’s draw, Luciano Darderi (No. 14 seed) will play against American Ethan Quinn, who is performing well in Mallorca, where he is a semifinalist. Also competing in the men’s tournament are Flavio Cobolli (No. 9 seed), drawn against Argentine Mariano Navone; Matteo Arnaldi (No. 32); Lorenzo Sonego, Mattia Bellucci, who faces Zachary Svajda, and Matteo Berrettini, who will take on veteran Stan Wawrinka in what is set to be his final Wimbledon tournament.
As for the women’s tournament, in addition to the challenging match awaiting Jasmine Paolini, Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Tyra Caterina Grant will also take the court: the former will face China’s Wang Xinyu, ranked No. 52 in the WTA rankings, while the latter, after successfully navigating three qualifying rounds, will play her first-ever match in the main draw of a Grand Slam against Katie Boulter, ranked No. 59 and a recent semifinalist at Queen’s.
