The World Cup fan zone in San Jose, California, was the scene of a fatal shooting that left at least one person dead and another seriously injured. Local police reported the incident on X, explaining that a man stormed into the popular entertainment district, blocking the streets and forcing bars to close. A homicide investigation has been launched.

The tragedy occurred on Sunday at San Pedro Square in San Jose, one of the official World Cup fan zones in the San Francisco Bay Area, where people had gathered to watch the matches on giant screens. Authorities clarified that no live World Cup broadcasts were taking place at the time of the shooting and that the only match scheduled for that day had ended around 2:00 p.m. local time.

“One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The incident is being investigated as a homicide. Several surrounding streets have been closed to traffic,” reads the message posted by the San Jose Police Department on X.
