Jessica Pegula is under fire after her comments about Marketa Vondrousova, who was suspended for four years after refusing to undergo an out-of-competition doping test in December 2025. At a press conference following her opening-round victory at Wimbledon against Darja Vidmanova, the American tennis player sparked controversy with her over-the-top remarks.

“As for Marketa, I don’t know the details of exactly what happened, but it seems to me that there are a lot of conflicting rumors right now. I just think that, for something like this—a four-year ban—someone’s career is being ruined for something that could really have been just a misunderstanding.”

Pegula brought up the cases of Sinner and Swiatek: “I simply think there needs to be a solution that doesn’t involve completely destroying someone’s career over something for which she didn’t even test positive.” I don’t really understand the difference between this and what happened with Sinner and Swiatek. It seems to me that something could be done to avoid ruining someone’s career in that way.”

Pegula’s comments did not sit well with Sinner’s fans, who made their voices heard on social media: “Because you’re ignorant (present participle of the verb ‘to ignore’). You need to read and do your research before speaking,” “Read up and get informed—the two cases are completely different,” “Pegula’s statements unfortunately demonstrate a total (or willfully ignored) legal and regulatory confusion regarding how anti-doping works,” “Someone help poor Pegula learn to read, write, and do math,” “These tennis players are losing all my respect. Not because of what they said against Jannik, but precisely because of such blatant and arrogant ignorance of their sport’s regulations,” are some of the publishable comments.
