BC Roma SPQR and Maxima Roma are registered for the league, but something doesn’t add up

The Italian Basketball Federation has officially announced the teams participating in the 2026–2027 season of Serie A basketball. There are sixteen participating teams, with Scafati Basket and Scaligera Verona joining the league in place of the relegated Dinamo Sassari and Trapani Shark, whose affiliation has been permanently revoked. Also confirmed are the two new Roman teams, SPQR and Maxima, which have acquired the franchises of Vanoli Cremona and Pallacanestro Brescia.
In short, this is good news for the two new Roman basketball teams, but something doesn’t add up. In fact, both are still very far from being ready for their first season in the LBA. They’re missing players, management, and even the names of the coaches who will be entrusted with the two rosters.
The only signing, officially announced by BC Roma SPQR, is Nico Mannion. Otherwise, there are plenty of rumors but nothing concrete. As for Maxima Roma, there are even more doubts, given that the team still needs to be built from the ground up.
Of course, there’s still time to catch up with the other clubs, but it’s clear that concern is growing, especially considering that the regular season of Italy’s top basketball league kicks off on September 27. That leaves just over two months to put together two teams from scratch (or nearly so).
