Jannik Sinner: Giovanna Botteri’s comments did not go over well at all

Jannik Sinner is still in the spotlight: a video by RAI correspondent Giovanna Botteri has gone viral on social media. On the sidelines of a recent event, the public television journalist spoke about the Italian tennis player, fresh off his Wimbledon victory, criticizing him for his home in Monte Carlo.

“It really bugs me that Sinner lives in Monte Carlo…” With her was Luca Sommi, a journalist for *Il Fatto Quotidiano*, who replied: “I wonder, you earn 70 million euros a year, but why don’t you do like Alcaraz, who kept his tax residence in Spain? Why do you have to go to Monte Carlo?” Then Botteri continued: “What I always ask myself is, what does someone do with 70 million a year? You buy something—a car, two cars.”

The exchange between the journalists did not sit well with many of Sinner’s fans, who fired back: “Social envy—it’s a disease,” “It’s hard to consider these people ‘journalists,’ since they don’t even bother to present the facts,” “Here we go again with this story! There are at least three other Italian tennis players who put up flags to show they train in Monte Carlo two or three times a year and then return to Italy. But they don’t say a word to them,” “It’s not a fake residence like those who actually live elsewhere. Besides, there Jannik can train with many colleagues without having to travel miles from his little town,” “But it’s his own business what he does with all that money,”—there are hundreds of comments.

After his triumph at Wimbledon, Sinner is treating himself to a few days of well-deserved rest with his girlfriend Laila Hasanovic before returning to training in preparation for the U.S. Open. In recent days, the world No. 1 was photographed by paparazzi in Palau, Sardinia, while grocery shopping at a supermarket.
