Jasmine Paolini: Bad News Ahead of the U.S. Open

Jasmine Paolini will not be competing in the WTA 500 in Washington or the WTA 1000 in Toronto—two key events of the summer leading up to the U.S. Open. The Italian champion, who has slipped out of the world’s Top 10 due to a series of physical issues—particularly with her left foot—that emerged in the spring and have not yet been resolved, will focus on making a full recovery ahead of the season’s final Grand Slam, in hopes of redeeming what has so far been a season to forget.
“Unfortunately, I’ve decided not to compete in the tournaments in Washington and Toronto so I can give my foot a little more rest,” Jasmine wrote on Instagram. “I’m sorry I won’t be there, and I hope everyone who attends enjoys two wonderful tournaments. Thank you so much to everyone, as always, for your love and support.”
Paolini, who has reached only one final this year—in doubles with Sara Errani at the WTA 1000 in Miami—has yet to win a tournament in a 2026 season that seems cursed. At Wimbledon, there were some signs of a comeback, as she reached the quarterfinals before losing to Marta Kostyuk, but her foot injury continues to hamper her.
In terms of her ranking, however, she will lose few points, given that Jasmine Paolini did not compete in Washington last year and was eliminated in the second round in Toronto: In total, the player from Bagni di Lucca will lose 35 points and, barring any major upsets, should retain her spot in the WTA Top 20.
