Jannik Sinner-Darren Cahill: The Future Remains a Mystery—The Self-Proclaimed Successor Is Back in the Running

Darren Cahill’s future continues to be a topic of discussion in the tennis world and, inevitably, among Jannik Sinner’s fans as well. The Australian remains a central figure on the Italian No. 1’s team, but recent rumors of a split at the end of 2026 have reignited doubts among fans and insiders. Meanwhile, some have already entered the conversation, openly suggesting they might be interested in taking over from the supercoach from Adelaide.
Once again, it was the comments from Juan Carlos Ferrero that caused a stir, this time in an interview with the Spanish outlet ‘As’. The former world No. 1, who has announced his return to the professional circuit starting in the 2027 season, has not ruled out a future collaboration with Sinner and, in fact, has hinted that he would very much like such an opportunity.
“Sinner is a spectacular player,” Ferrero said bluntly. “He has already proven more than once how difficult he is to beat when he’s in top form. I know that many Spaniards wouldn’t take kindly to a collaboration with him, but it would be a purely professional decision; I have no intention of snubbing Carlos Alcaraz. People should understand that we’re professionals.”
Ferrero’s comments come at a particularly delicate time for Sinner. In recent days, speculation about Cahill’s future has intensified following rumors circulated by former coach Brad Gilbert, who, on his podcast, spoke of misunderstandings regarding the handling of Jannik’s recent hiatus due to his knee injury, although no official confirmation has come from those directly involved.
Cahill himself, on the other hand, seems intent on projecting calm, so much so that he posted a curious image on social media showing him during a round of golf with a stuffed fox perched on his cart. This detail did not go unnoticed, considering that “The Fox” is one of the best-known nicknames associated with Sinner. For many fans, it’s an affectionate message that shows the relationship between the two remains strong, at least on a personal level.
Regardless of how it’s interpreted, one thing is certain: the last time Cahill spoke about his future, he hinted that he wouldn’t stay beyond 2026, after having already expressed doubts in 2025 about continuing the relationship. The Australian coach had expressed a desire to end his coaching career to devote himself to other projects, which is why the question of his successor is becoming more pressing by the day.
