Lorenzo Musetti Sticks to His Position on Montreal and Speaks Candidly About Jannik Sinner

Lorenzo Musetti’s run toward a return to the ATP Top 10 came to an end in the quarterfinals of the Washington tournament, where he lost to Spain’s Rafael Jodar: a result that came despite a strong start, but one that does not overshadow the signs of recovery he has shown after a long, difficult period marked by injuries. The loss in the U.S. capital, however, does not change Musetti’s schedule, nor his stance on one of the most discussed topics of recent days: Jannik Sinner’s withdrawal from Montreal.

In an interview with the organizers of the Washington tournament on the sidelines of his participation, Musetti was candid on the subject: “I think Sinner and his staff’s decision came after a careful internal discussion, taking into account all the implications for his body and health. They know exactly what he needs; I believe this decision stems from what happened at Roland Garros: he’s an extraordinary champion and was winning consistently, but he had simply been playing too much.”

The world No. 1 has chosen to skip Montreal in order to arrive at the U.S. Open with as much energy as possible, avoiding a repeat of what happened in the spring: the grueling run of five consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments—all of which he won—had taken a heavy toll, and at Roland Garros, when Jannik was one step away from the third round, his body said “enough” without warning, marking a bitter end.

His approach to the run-up to Wimbledon (no tournaments, just one exhibition match) has become a model: fewer matches, higher quality, more freshness. The decision to play in Montreal follows the same approach, despite the controversy sparked by tournament director Valerie Tetreault, to whom Sinner chose not to respond directly, explaining only that he is managing his energy as best he can amid a schedule as demanding as that of top-level tennis.
