The Italian volleyball community is in shock over the death of Michela Monari

The Italian volleyball community is reeling from the passing, at just 53 years old, of Michela Monari, a player who competed in the 1990s—a time when the women’s national team was laying the groundwork for the great successes of the new millennium. Throughout her career, Monari played in the top division for Bologna, Modena (the club with which she won three CEV Cups between 1995 and 1997), and Reggio Emilia. Her daughter, Lisa Monari Gamba, had celebrated the victory at the Under-18 European Championship with the national team just a few days ago.

“The Italian Volleyball Federation (FIPAV) expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of Michela Monari, a former Serie A player who wore the jerseys of Bologna, Reggio Emilia, and Modena,” reads the statement released by FIPAV. Michela Monari also made 79 appearances for the Italian national team, leaving a wonderful memory of herself in the hearts of fans, teammates, and all those who worked with her.”

“President Giuseppe Manfredi, Vice Presidents Elio Sità and Massimo Sala, Secretary General Stefano Bellotti, the Federal Council, and the entire FIPAV join Michela’s family in their grief, sending their heartfelt condolences.” The Women’s Volleyball League also expressed its condolences: “The Women’s Volleyball League and all its member clubs stand in deep sorrow and affection with Michela Monari’s family following her untimely passing. Our deepest and warmest condolences go out to her daughter Lisa and the entire family.”
