Esposito-Cagliari Chaos: Two Big Clubs Smell a Deal

At Cagliari, the Sebastiano Esposito situation is dominating the headlines. The center forward has been in contact with the Sardinian club’s management for some time regarding a contract renewal, but the two sides remain far apart, and the situation has escalated in recent hours.

Cagliari issued an official statement saying that the player “left the first team’s training camp in Ponte di Legno without authorization.” He therefore did not travel to Germany (Cagliari is set to face Union Berlin in a friendly match), and the club “will assess what has happened and reserves the right to take appropriate action.”

Shortly thereafter, Esposito’s agent, Mario Giuffredi, issued a strong rebuttal: “Cagliari’s statement is a complete fabrication! Yesterday I was on the phone from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. with sporting director Accardi and head coach Pisacane, and—with the player himself present—we agreed on a few days’ absence due to a period of intense stress the young man was going through. We agreed that he would return on August 5 after the friendly match in Germany,” he explained to TuttoCagliari.

Tensions are running very high, and several teams are monitoring the situation, with Atalanta and Lazio in the lead. The Bergamo-based club is on the hunt for a promising young player, and Maurizio Sarri has long been a big fan of Esposito, but Gattuso is also very fond of the former Inter player.
