Jakob Butturff has died. The bowling superstar was just 32 years old.

Jakob Butturff, a star of American bowling who won eight tournaments on the PBA Tour—the top professional circuit—during his brilliant career, has died at the age of just 32. The champion’s death was confirmed in a statement from the Professional Bowlers Association: “Jakob Butturff died suddenly at the age of 32. Butturff was an eight-time PBA Tour champion, winning a major in 2019 at the USBC Masters.”

“Jakob was one of the most unique players in PBA history,” said PBA Commissioner Tom Clark. “Fans admired his style of bowling as he rode a wave of strikes to become a leading figure in the sport, capable of winning at any time and in any event. Jakob was kind, respectful, and a champion. He will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with everyone who was touched by his unique journey.”

Jakob Butturff was one of the most successful and iconic left-handed bowlers of his generation on the North American professional circuit. He joined the Professional Bowlers Association in 2015, and over the course of more than ten years competing at the national level, he made 214 appearances, winning 8 major PBA Tour titles (including the USBC Masters Major in 2019) and a remarkable 27 titles on the PBA Regional Tour, setting the all-time record in 2016 for 9 regional wins in a single season.

Among his historic achievements is the perfect 300 he bowled live on television during the 2020 PBA Tour Finals (the 28th in PBA history), as well as having surpassed the $1 million mark in official tournament prize money alone.

With the U.S. national team, he also won the team gold medal at the 2017 World Championships, gold in doubles at the 2019 Pan American Games, and gold in the Trios category at the 2021 IBF Super World Championships.
