Lara Gut-Behrami Retires from Skiing: The Former Olympic Champion Calls It Quits

Lara Gut-Behrami has announced her retirement from competitive skiing, bringing to a close one of the most prestigious careers in the history of alpine skiing. The Swiss champion is stepping away after amassing an extraordinary list of achievements, including three Olympic medals (one gold and two bronze), nine World Championship medals (two gold, four silver, and three bronze), two overall World Cup titles (2016 and 2024), six Super-G discipline titles (2014, 2016, 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025) and one giant slalom title, won in 2024.

On the World Cup circuit, Gut-Behrami finished with a total of 48 victories: 24 in super-G, 13 in downhill, 10 in giant slalom, and one victory in another discipline. Her total number of podium finishes stands at 101—just one shy of the Swiss record held by Vreni Schneider—achieved over the course of 18 seasons and 395 races.

Her retirement from competition, however, was heavily influenced by the injury she sustained on November 20, 2025, during a training session at Copper Mountain. The skier suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a torn medial collateral ligament, and a meniscus tear in her left knee—a serious setback that prevented her from competing in the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

Her retirement marks the end of an era for women’s alpine skiing. Thanks to her consistent performance at the highest levels, her versatility in both speed and technical disciplines, and the results she achieved over nearly two decades, Lara Gut-Behrami leaves an indelible mark on the history of the sport.
