Jannik Sinner is set to depart for the United States on Sunday, but the latest rumors surrounding the Italian player have once again cast doubt on the five-time Grand Slam champion’s physical condition. According to reports in *Corriere della Sera*, the champion from Sesto Pusteria may soon undergo a second medical examination, following the one he had a few days ago at the Physioclinic orthopedic clinic.
According to the Milan-based newspaper, the checkup at the clinic was not a routine visit: Sinner felt discomfort in his knee and consulted Professor Gianluca Melegati for a second opinion; over the years, Melegati has treated sports greats such as Inter’s “Phenomenon” Ronaldo and MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo.
Sinner is currently assessing the situation, and another medical examination cannot be ruled out if the discomfort in his leg persists: his departure for Cincinnati could be postponed by a few days. The Italian has no intention of taking any risks and may play it safe by skipping the Cincinnati Masters 1000 as well, if necessary. It will be crucial to determine whether the knee issue is merely temporary.
One player who will definitely be absent from Cincinnati is Carlos Alcaraz, who has announced his withdrawal from the tournament, further delaying his return to the court following the wrist injury that has kept him off the courts since Barcelona, forcing him to miss Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon. The tournament organizers released an official statement: “Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open. We wish our 2025 champion a speedy recovery. We can’t wait to welcome you back next year!”
Sinner’s main goal remains the US Open, which begins on August 30. At Flushing Meadows, the South Tyrolean has already made his mark: in 2024, he won the title by defeating Taylor Fritz in the final; in 2025, he returned to compete for the trophy but lost to Alcaraz. This time, he’s aiming for his sixth career Grand Slam title.
