It’s 100-meter day at the European Athletics Championships currently underway in Birmingham: on Tuesday evening, Europe’s fastest men will compete to determine who is the best on the Old Continent. The event is taking place at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, United Kingdom, and among the most anticipated competitors is Italy’s Marcell Jacobs, who will be defending the continental title he won in Rome in 2024.

On July 1, at the Silver-level stop of the Continental Tour in Eisenstadt, Austria, the Italian sprinter clocked a sensational 9.67 with a wind speed exceeding the limit (+4.1), the third-fastest time ever recorded worldwide under any conditions, trailing only Usain Bolt’s 9.58 and 9.63. Earlier, at the Golden Gala in Rome in early June, Jacobs had run 9.99, then improved further with a 9.96 at the Diamond League meet in Paris, which earned him the European season lead and lane 4 in the final.
