Milan Transfer Market: The Player Rejected by Amorim Refuses to Leave
Milan is facing more difficulty than expected in offloading several players deemed surplus to requirements by Ruben Amorim following the Asian tour. The Rossoneri must sell several surplus players if they want to continue strengthening the squad, but with less than two weeks until the start of the season, the Rossoneri’s transfer efforts are still in limbo.
Among the players deemed unsuitable by Amorim is Fikayo Tomori, for two reasons: Amorim does not consider him a good fit for his style of play (which is why Mario Gila was signed), and the Englishman has a contract set to expire in 2027 that Milan does not intend to renew on improved terms. The Milan-based club doesn’t want to lose him on a free transfer in a year and must find a solution quickly: according to rumors, Premier League clubs such as Newcastle and Coventry are interested in him. Juventus has also been linked with him. Milan could let him go for a fee between 15 and 20 million euros.
But Tomori reportedly has no intention of leaving. According to Tuttosport, the English center back—a key player in the 2022 Serie A title run—has no intention of leaving Milan this summer and is determined to stay until his contract expires, leaving on a free transfer next summer. The defender wants to convince Amorim and play his cards right.
Should Tomori’s transfer go through, the name at the top of Amorim’s list would be Gonçalo Inácio of Sporting Lisbon, a true protégé of the Portuguese coach since his time in Lisbon. However, this move remains contingent on the English defender’s departure: without the resulting funds, the Rossoneri would not be in a position to make a move for the Portuguese center back.
Tomori’s situation is part of a broader picture of player transfers that remains largely unresolved. In addition to the Englishman, Amorim has ruled out several other players from the roster: among them are Youssouf Fofana, who is rumored to be leaving for around 20 million euros with several Premier League and La Liga clubs on his trail, and Santiago Gimenez, who is now close to joining Porto on a loan with an option to buy for around 20–22 million. There are also still matters to be resolved regarding Warren Bondo, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Pervis Estupinan, and the situation involving Samuele Ricci, who is reportedly being eyed by Maurizio Sarri’s Atalanta.
Finally, we must not forget the Rafael Leão situation, which continues to dominate the headlines at AC Milan. The only concrete offer received by Milan is from Galatasaray, which the club considers completely insufficient; it has no intention of selling its No. 10 for less than 60 million euros. And the Portuguese player himself is by no means convinced about moving to Turkey.
