Juventus Transfer Market: Renewed Interest in the Striker Who Ended Up in Saudi Arabia

Among the various players Juventus has been scouting, Mateo Retegui has resurfaced as a prospect. However, this deal presents more than a few challenges. The center forward is recovering from a tibia fracture, and his condition is just one of the factors to be evaluated. The financial situation is a major concern: at Al-Qadsiah, he earns a salary of nearly 20 million and still has two years remaining on his contract. Added to this are the uncertainties surrounding a potential return to Italian soccer after his stint in Saudi Arabia.

The reappearance of his name on Juventus’ radar, however, should not be interpreted as a sign that negotiations have already begun. Retegui and Juventus had already crossed paths on the transfer market in recent months. In January, the club had gathered information on the forward, who reportedly viewed the possibility of returning to Serie A with interest, partly to revive his World Cup aspirations. His profile had also been evaluated during Comolli’s tenure and may now once again become an option as Juve seeks to address gaps in its attacking lineup.

What makes this prospect particularly interesting is his relationship with Marco Ottolini. The sporting director has known Retegui since his time at Genoa, a stint during which the center forward made an excellent impression. This firsthand knowledge keeps the door open, though it does not eliminate concerns regarding the costs and the overall feasibility of the deal.

Much will depend on the structure of the deal, if it goes through. The most favorable option for Juventus would be a loan, though obtaining Al-Qadsiah’s approval for such a solution could prove particularly difficult. The situation is different for the player: faced with the chance to return to Italy, wear the black-and-white jersey, and immediately take on a central role in the team’s plans, Retegui could easily be drawn to Turin.

His relationship with Luciano Spalletti could also play a role in the matter, as Spalletti knows the forward very well from having coached him on the national team. And the Italian national team remains a key factor in Retegui’s considerations. The return of Roberto Mancini—the coach who first believed in him by calling him up to the Italian national team—has further strengthened the appeal of the national team.
