Federica Brignone Forced to Undergo Another Surgery

Another setback for Federica Brignone. On social media, the Italian ski champion—a two-time gold medalist at Milan-Cortina 2026—announced that she will undergo another surgery on her left leg, which has been operated on several times in the past following a serious injury in 2025.

“My leg continues to improve, but unfortunately, I still experience pain when doing certain activities and while skiing. For this reason, together with the medical team, we’ve decided to proceed with surgery,” the Italian athlete wrote on social media. “The main goal will be to remove the plate and clean out the area, with the possibility of also addressing the meniscus.”

Brignone was supposed to decide in the coming days whether to join the rest of the Italian national team at their training camp in Argentina: “The decision on whether to address the meniscus will be made directly during this afternoon’s surgery. That’s all for now. I’ll keep you updated.”

Federica Brignone’s serious injury occurred in April 2025, when she was injured during the second run of the giant slalom at the Italian championships. At that time, the champion suffered a comminuted, multi-fragmentary fracture of the tibial plateau and the head of the fibula, in addition to injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial capsuloligamentous compartment of her left leg.

After a series of surgeries and a miraculous recovery, Federica had amazed everyone at the Olympics by winning two gold medals. After the Games, she had tried to return to the World Cup, but severe pain forced her to end the season early.
