2026 Vuelta: Brennan Wins His Second Sprint Stage; Two Italians in the Top Five. Pogacar Comfortably in the Red Jersey

Matthew Brennan (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) won the fifth stage of the 2026 Vuelta a España, a 173.3-kilometer stage raced entirely in Catalonia, starting in Falset and finishing in Roquetes. The British rider prevailed in the bunch sprint, beating Belgian Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and two Italian cyclists: Vincenzo Albanese (EF Education – EasyPost) rounded out the day’s podium, while Alessandro Romele (XDS Astana Team) finished the stage in fourth place.

Nothing has changed in the general classification, where Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates – XRG) comfortably retains the red leader’s jersey with a 3’21” lead over his compatriot Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and 3’32” over Enric Mas (Movistar Team). Pogacar also leads the points classification (the 1998-born phenom has collected 82 points, compared to 60 for Brennan and 57 for Ethan Hayter), the best climber classification (23 points compared to Lorenzo Fortunato’s 10), and the most combative rider classification.

The riders now face a couple of rather challenging stages: on Thursday, the route goes from Alcossebre to Castellón, with interesting climbs that could reward bold moves, while Friday brings the big stage from Vall d’Alba to Aramon Valdelinares, which—though Pogacar remains the favorite as usual—could significantly shift the balance of the standings.

As for the Italian riders, in addition to today’s two Top 5 finishes (and Alberto Dainese of Suodal Quick-Step’s eighth-place finish), Mattia Gaffuri’s breakaway attempt—in which he was among the key riders—is worth noting. However, the Team Picnic PostNL rider was reeled in very early, shortly after the 100-kilometer-to-go sign.
