The 2026 U.S. Open, the 146th edition of this historic tournament, has been underway since August 30 on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows in New York, and once again this year it closes out the Grand Slam calendar. Jannik Sinner is absent; in 2025, he starred in a historic final in which he lost to his longtime rival Carlos Alcaraz. This year’s tournament final is scheduled for Sunday, September 13.

The US Open has been around since 1881, and has been held every year without fail since then. After a three-year period on green clay (1975–1977), the tournament has been played on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows Park since 1978. For decades, the venue has been the site of great achievements by American tennis players (from Jimmy Connors’ five titles to John McEnroe’s four, and on to Pete Sampras’ five), but in the new millennium, the titles have been shared among the sport’s top players. Both Rafa Nadal and, later, Novak Djokovic have each won four titles, without managing to surpass that mark.

The tournament, scheduled to run through September 13, looks particularly wide open this year precisely because of the absence of Sinner, the world No. 1 and 2024 defending champion. The South Tyrolean is undergoing rehabilitation at J Medical in Turin for inflammation in the tendons of his right knee, with the goal of returning to competition in late September in Beijing. This is a major blow to the tour, as many in the paddock have pointed out: without him, the draw is inevitably more unpredictable.

Filling in for the big absentee is Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion, who returns to the court after more than four months out with a wrist injury. The Spaniard, currently ranked No. 3 in the ATP rankings, made no secret of the challenges of his return: “Coming back here and playing best-of-five sets after such a long time will be really tough. My team and I, however, believe this is the right time.” Alcaraz also wanted to send a message of support to his rival: “It’s strange that someone like Jannik isn’t here for a major tournament like this. We haven’t seen each other in months; I wish him all the best.”

Alexander Zverev stands out in the top half of the draw, making his debut as the top seed in a Grand Slam. The German, who already won a Major in 2026, faces a challenging path that could see him face Australia’s Alex de Minaur or Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals. In the lower half, meanwhile, Alcaraz could face home favorite Ben Shelton, who has had an excellent season culminating in a victory in Montreal, while Djokovic could take on Frances Tiafoe or Daniil Medvedev.

There are a full ten Italians in the men’s draw, a testament to the extraordinary depth of Italian tennis. All eyes are on Flavio Cobolli, the fifth seed, and Lorenzo Musetti, the 13th seed. The two had already faced off in the round of 16 in last year’s tournament. Rounding out the group are Matteo Berrettini, Lorenzo Sonego, Mattia Bellucci, Matteo Arnaldi, Luciano Darderi, Francesco Passaro, Guerrieri, and the young Cinà, making his second Grand Slam appearance after the French Open.
