Four-point shots and three-point dunks: the revolution begins in Australia’s NBL

Throughout its history, basketball has embraced various innovations. Take the three-point shot, for example. It was officially introduced in the NBA “as late as” 1979 and, in international basketball, a full five years later.

According to reports from various Australian media outlets, the NBL (the top basketball league in Australia and New Zealand) would like to introduce some major changes to the modern game.

Specifically, there is talk of two decidedly “revolutionary” proposals: the four-point shot and the three-point dunk. The first change would apply to baskets scored from the center logo. Something similar has already been seen during the NBA All-Star Game and, to be fair, it has also been officially introduced in the Philippines starting with the 2024–25 season.

The idea is to make basketball even more fun and exciting by significantly increasing the spectacle on the court. The NBL would have liked to test the new rules already, but first, it will need to discuss them with FIBA. What is certain is that the proposal is “outside the box.”
