The action-packed days of sports continue in Taranto and the surrounding area with the 2026 Mediterranean Games, which—for this 20th edition—are being held in the “City of the Two Seas,” chosen as the main venue, with other towns in the province also participating (Statte, Crispiano, Castellaneta, Massafra, Martina Franca, San Giorgio Jonico, Montemesola, Torricella, and Grottaglie), the Brindisi area (Brindisi itself, Fasano, and Francavilla Fontana), and the Murgia Barese region (Conversano), with events also scheduled in Lecce.

The 2026 edition will be the fourth ever held in Italy: in 1963, Naples hosted the Mediterranean Games; in 1997, Bari; and in 2009, Pescara. Italy has topped the final medal count a total of fourteen times, most recently at the last edition in Oran (Algeria), with 48 gold, 50 silver, and 61 bronze medals. In the other five editions, France topped the medal count four times, and Yugoslavia did so once, when it hosted the Mediterranean Games in 1979 in Split, now part of Croatia.
