F1: Kimi Antonelli Faces His Toughest Test Yet—The World Championship Leader Speaks Out

One of the most eagerly anticipated stars of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza is undoubtedly Kimi Antonelli: the Italian Mercedes driver, who leads the Formula 1 World Championship, will, however, be forced to stage an extremely difficult comeback in front of the crowds packing the Monza Autodrome, because due to a power unit change, he’ll start from the very back of the grid regardless of his qualifying result. Despite this, the talented driver from Bologna is confident he can end the weekend with a smile.

“A home race is always special,” Antonelli told Sky Sport. “I’ll be starting from the back, but I’ll do everything I can to make a comeback. The penalty complicates things, but it doesn’t change my approach: I’ll try to move up, because anything can happen on the track. The important thing is to stay focused and not make any silly mistakes.”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff had foreshadowed the penalty during a press conference: “For us, the Monza weekend is starting off on the wrong foot,” he said bluntly. “Kimi will have to serve a penalty for the power unit replacement, and that means starting from the back of the grid.”

“It’s a situation that’s disappointing for him and the fans, who would have liked to see him battling at the front in his home race,” he added. But our sport makes no exceptions: when you make decisions that are necessary for the championship battle, sometimes you have to accept a price to pay in the short term.”

Antonelli, born in 2006, leads the overall standings with 242 points: his lead over his main rivals—teammate George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton—is currently comfortable (both are in fact 59 points behind), and his first-place position at the end of the Italian Grand Prix is not in question. However, there are still ten more race weekends left in the championship: every point could potentially be decisive between now and the end of the season.
