No one compares to the Premier League: a 3.7 billion transfer market, but Serie A held its own

Once again, the Premier League dominated the summer transfer window. Manchester City’s big-money finish (signing Enzo Fernández) allowed the Premier League to break its all-time transfer spending record for the second summer in a row. The 3.582 billion euros spent a year ago is now a thing of the past. The English Premier League has reached a total spending figure of 3.7 billion euros.

While awaiting the final transfer moves (including free agents and leagues that are still “open”), the Premier League has far surpassed the 3.286 billion euros accumulated by Serie A (1.160 billion euros), the Bundesliga (783.8 million euros), La Liga (738.03 million euros), and Ligue 1 (605.1 million euros), as revealed by Marca.

That’s right: even if the other major leagues combined their spending, they wouldn’t reach the amount spent by the Premier League. A total of 12 English teams made the most expensive signing in their history this summer: Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Brighton, Brentford, Leeds, Fulham, Coventry, Ipswich, Nottingham Forest, and Hull City.

The latest transfer blockbuster was Enzo Maresca, who moved from Chelsea to Maresca’s Manchester City for a record fee of 145 million euros. Overall, Manchester City is the English club that has spent the most—exactly 456 million euros in total. PSG, on the other hand, is an interesting case, having generated a surplus of 182.3 million euros. Some spend, while others profit.
