Fabio Grosso isn’t stepping down, but a name is already being mentioned as a possible replacement

Fabio Grosso is not resigning and, despite fierce criticism from the fans—and, above all, three straight losses in three games, two of which were at home—he remains at the helm of Fiorentina. After the loss to Torino, the Viola coach ruled out stepping down, though he took full responsibility for a season start that has fallen well short of expectations. “I’ve never considered resigning,” the coach clarified, noting that he was aware from the start of the difficulties he would face in Florence.
However, the tension surrounding the team is evident. The fans, after supporting the Viola for most of the match, openly expressed their disappointment, repeatedly chanting “Grosso, get off the bench.” The results are particularly troubling: three losses in the first three league matches—a start Fiorentina hasn’t seen since the 1935–36 season.
Despite the fans’ discontent, the club does not seem inclined to change coaches at this time. No club officials came forward after the game to publicly defend Grosso, but the message conveyed by the club is one of continuity. The owners and management are dissatisfied with both the results and the team’s performance; however, they consider a dismissal premature, given the numerous changes made over the summer and the fact that the team is still a work in progress.
Naturally, the first names are already beginning to circulate in case the situation doesn’t improve quickly: a second stint for Paolo Vanoli is out of the question, some are speculating about a chance for another 2026 World Cup champion, Alberto Gilardino, who played for Fiorentina from 2008 to 2012 and for a few months in 2015.
