Milan Transfer Market: Amorim Blocked the Latest Transfer at the Last Minute

Transfer news coming out of Portugal: Milan coach Ruben Amorim, in the final days of the summer transfer window (which in Portugal was set for September 5), refused to let a player from his squad leave—a player who had been on Benfica’s radar for days.

As reported by the Portuguese daily Record, the Eagles were on the trail of Rossoneri fullback Pervis Estupinan and had made several attempts to convince the Diavolo to part ways with the defender, who was among last season’s most disappointing signings.

Milan, however, said no at the last minute at the urging of Ruben Amorim, who—after evaluating him during preseason and given the lack of alternatives at that position—decided to keep the Ecuadorian fullback on the roster for this season as well. Aston Villa had also shown interest in Estupinan.

Amorim gave the Rossoneri’s transfer window a positive review: “My players are among the best in the world, so I can’t give them an eight or a nine. Every player we’ve signed is perfect for our team, so I’ll give it a 10! I have the best squad in the world. We need to assess the situation, and we know that two center forwards with different characteristics could have come in handy. We don’t know what will happen: maybe we’ll be a bit short in that position. “I think we can also play with three players rotating in attack. As you can see, we rely heavily on one-on-one duels, so in some games it might be useful to have a forward with characteristics similar to, for example, those of Pulisic.”
