Del Potro Steps In as Doctor for Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz

More and more tennis players are speaking out against the packed schedules, and Carlos Alcaraz is certainly one of the leading advocates of this protest. The Murcia-born player, exhausted by his heavy workload, has repeatedly asked the ATP to take action, but so far nothing has changed.
Playing this often inevitably exposes tennis players to more frequent injuries, and Juan Martín del Potro knows this all too well. In an interview with Marca, he offered some advice to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz: “Tennis is the most demanding sport there is, especially since there are tournaments practically every week. These two are so strong that they can afford to take five or six months off without losing ranking positions or many points.”
“I heard the other day that Alcaraz said he would play only the tournaments he wanted to. I think that’s a smart decision, and other players should follow his example. The big difference is that in my day, when I got injured, missing one or two tournaments could drop me from fourth to eighth or even tenth in the rankings. Today, with Sinner and Alcaraz dominating the rest of the tour, it’s very important that they listen to their bodies,” the Argentine suggested.
Del Potro himself recently weighed in on the rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz: “For me, Carlos is the best player today. No one is as well-rounded as Carlos. He and Sinner are competing for the most prestigious titles. Jannik’s game resembles Novak Djokovic’s because he’s very consistent in his performance, but the Spaniard can hit every kind of shot and is magical. That’s why I’m a big fan of his.”
Del Potro went on to highlight the potential of his fellow Argentines: “We have a good generation of players. Sometimes they’re prone to too many ups and downs, but in general they perform at a high level and can make their mark when they’re in top form.”
