Trino Vercellese: A 1959 GAZ Volga M21 Wins First Prize at the Concours d’Elegance
A 1959 GAZ Volga M21 won first prize in the category reserved for models from the 1950s and 1960s at the 25th Concorso d’Eleganza in Trino Vercellese. This prestigious award came at the conclusion of an event featuring over one hundred cars.
The winning car is one of the most iconic models of post-World War II Soviet automobile production. The GAZ Volga M21 made its market debut in 1956 and quickly earned a solid reputation, above all for its sturdiness and reliability.
This sturdiness was not merely a design choice but a genuine necessity. The Volga had to be capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of the former Soviet Union, which in many areas was characterized by challenging roads and particularly severe weather. It was precisely these qualities that helped make it a beloved and instantly recognizable car.
A decidedly more unique version is also linked to the history of the M21. To meet the needs of the KGB, special models were produced, equipped with a powerful 5.5-liter V8 engine—quite different from the engines found in Volga cars intended for everyday use.
More than sixty years later, the GAZ Volga continues to be appreciated by classic car enthusiasts.
