After a difficult start to the season—in which their only two wins came in the Coppa Italia—Monza is looking to secure some much-needed points against Sassuolo, a team buoyed by last Sunday’s last-minute victory over Juventus. The match will be played at the Brianteo, home of the Biancorossi, with kickoff at 8:45 p.m. Daniele Perenzoni, from the Rovereto Referees’ Association, will officiate the match.

The first four league matches have left more doubts than certainties for Ivan Juric and his players: their only point came on the road at Parma (1-1 on September 6), while the away match at Lecce saw the Brianza side fall 3-2 in one of the direct battles for survival. Touré and Ziolkowski will be out, as will the long-term injured Pessina. In the Croatian coach’s 3-4-2-1 formation, barring any surprises, Varela will lead the attack, supported by Robinson and Cutrone.

Sassuolo, on the other hand, has enjoyed a month full of highlights, starting with a 2-1 win over Torino, followed by a victorious penalty shootout in the Coppa Italia against Frosinone, a draw with Bologna (although the Neroverdi were leading 2-1 in the 90th minute), and, most notably, a 3-2 win over Juventus, with Sebastiano Esposito scoring alongside former Hibernian and Verona player Kieron Bowie and Vasilije Adzic—who, incidentally, is on loan to Sassuolo from Juventus. Coach Alberto Aquilani will be without the injured Idzes and Volpato: Caleta-Car will start in defense, and Thorstvedt will play in midfield.

Probable lineups

MONZA (3-4-2-1): Tornqvist; Kouadio, Lucchesi, Carboni; Birindelli, Folorunsho, Akinsanmiro, Mangas; Robinson, Cutrone; Varela. Head Coach: Juric.

SASSUOLO (4-3-3): Muric; Cinquegrano, Caleta-Car, Leysen, Doig; Adzic, Matic, Thorstvedt; Berardi, Bowie, Laurienté. Head Coach: Aquilani.
