Jannik Sinner: A Surprise Invitation That Could Change His Future

The Laver Cup is looking to the future and, as the tournament progresses, aims to expand its field by including top players on the tour who have not yet had the opportunity to participate. This openness was reiterated by Tony Godsick, president of the competition, who explained that the organization wants to “attract players who may not have participated yet and give them a chance to play,” while also seeking to showcase them in an atmosphere different from the usual one on the ATP Tour.

This concept was also echoed by CEO Steve Zacks, who noted that several young players have been following the Laver Cup for years, making participation in the event one of their goals. This inevitably leads to a focus on the big names who have not yet donned the jersey of either team.

Among them is Jannik Sinner. Italy’s number one has not yet taken part in the Laver Cup, and given the event’s track record of featuring the world’s top tennis stars, his name could be one of the organizers’ future targets. At the moment, however, the Italian’s schedule has undergone another change: Sinner has announced his withdrawal from the ATP 500 in Beijing, a tournament that was supposed to mark his return to the court following his hiatus at the end of the American hard-court season.

Meanwhile, the Laver Cup is preparing to celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2027 in Los Angeles, with the Intuit Dome serving as the venue. And with an eye toward future editions, Godsick and Zacks have reaffirmed their commitment to continuing to innovate and to bring in new stars from the tour.
