Lorenzo Musetti’s Nightmare: He Breaks His Hand

Lorenzo Musetti’s 2026 season is looking increasingly cursed: the Carrara native has announced he is withdrawing from the ATP 500 tournament in Tokyo due to an injury—yet another in a season best forgotten. The Italian player fractured the ring finger on his right hand and withdrew on the eve of his opening match against Britain’s Arthur Fery.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to play in Tokyo this year due to a small fracture in the ring finger of my right hand that I sustained during a training session. I’m very disappointed, especially because I was really looking forward to playing in front of my Japanese fans again and experiencing the wonderful atmosphere of Tokyo once more,” Musetti explained.

Musetti will, in any case, try to be back in time for the Shanghai Masters 1000: “I’ll do everything I can to be ready for that tournament. Thank you all for your support and for the many messages. I hope to see you very soon.”

In recent months, Musetti was forced to miss Roland Garros and Wimbledon due to a nagging problem with his left thigh. In January, he suffered a painful withdrawal during his quarterfinal match against Novak Djokovic, when—leading 2-0 in sets—he was forced to throw in the towel due to a muscle tear. In the rankings, the Tuscan tennis player has slipped to 25th place and risks losing even more positions between now and the end of the year.
