Sofia Goggia is still in uncharted waters: “I can’t make any plans”

Sofia Goggia clearly explained the misfortune she found herself unwittingly caught up in over the past few weeks: the Italian skier was forced to return from the Italian team’s training camp in Patagonia after contracting a “rare” virus.
The viral infection cost her more than three weeks of ski training: “Right now I can’t make any plans; I need time to recover from the effects of the virus,” she said at the Trento Sports Festival. With the World Championships just twenty days away, the 33-year-old champion from Bergamo still finds herself in uncharted waters, and it will take patience to recover fully.
“I started feeling strange pains; as I walked, I realized something wasn’t right,” said Sofia, who underwent several tests at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, where she was diagnosed with a “virus that is uncommon among adults.”
“There was no cure for this double infection,” the champion said, as reported by *La Gazzetta dello Sport*. “I’ll try to recover and ski as strong as ever. I need to be mentally sharp and physically coordinated,” concluded Goggia, who is, in any case, on the road to recovery. In recent days, she has been training at a gym on the island of Favignana, in Sicily.
