The MotoGP format is changing again in 2027: Dorna and Liberty Media have issued an official statement announcing the changes ahead of the next World Championship. The American owners want more excitement on Fridays and Saturdays and have decided to introduce a qualifying session entirely dedicated to the Sprint race, following the Formula 1 model.

To summarize, on Friday there will be two free practice sessions lasting 45 and 30 minutes, plus a 15-minute Sprint Qualifying session to determine the starting grid for the Sprint race. On Saturday, there will be a third 20-minute free practice session, a 15-minute Q1 session with all riders, and a 15-minute Q2 session with the top 12 riders to determine the starting grid for Sunday’s race. Then comes the classic Sprint race.

On Sunday, there will be a 10-minute warm-up before the start, followed by the classic Sunday race. The official qualifying sessions for Sunday’s race will also change: all riders will advance to Q1, and the top 12 will move on to Q2.

Ahead of the Indonesian GP, Pecco Bagnaia shared his thoughts: “At Motegi, we managed to bring home more important points, although I have to admit that I struggled quite a bit while riding. In the past, I’ve been fast and successful on this track, even though we struggled a lot last year. The goal is to keep working with the team to regain that best feeling and get back to competing for the positions that matter.”
