The rift between Cristiano Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus continues to spark debate, and now an ally from South America has openly come out in support of the Portuguese superstar. It is Romario, a Brazilian soccer legend and 1994 World Cup champion, who did not mince words when commenting on the clash that is setting Portugal—and beyond—abuzz.

Speaking on the “Charla Podcast,” the former Brazilian striker expressed full understanding for Cristiano Ronaldo’s position, as Ronaldo had recently accused the head coach of breaking prior agreements.

“Cristiano is a very straightforward person, and Jorge Jesus didn’t honor the agreements. In that situation, he felt undervalued and left. I would have done the same,” Romario stated, before going even further with much harsher words directed at the former Benfica and Al-Hilal coach.

According to the Brazilian, in fact, Ronaldo was actually wrong not to have confronted the Portuguese coach more forcefully: “Before leaving, I would have told him what I thought. The mistake was not telling him to go to hell,” commented the former star, who actually used a much more colorful expression.

Meanwhile, the rift between Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal’s head coach appears to be growing ever deeper. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner explained in a lengthy message that he felt “betrayed,” citing this as the reason for his decision to step away from the national team. On the other hand, Jorge Jesus has opted for a tone of irony and downplaying the situation. When asked about the matter, the head coach replied with just a few words: “I read the statement, and now, as I do every day, I’m going to the Federation to work, thinking about the national team.”

The controversy, therefore, continues to escalate and draw in prominent figures from international soccer, and Romario’s comments likely represent the harshest criticism leveled at Jorge Jesus so far by a soccer legend.
